说起办公室里secretary，可能大家第一反应出的意思都是秘书，不过secretary可不只有这一层意思，比如遇见下面这个句子应该注意了：
I chose the tall secretary where mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny window.
译这句话时要格外小心，不然就会把tall secretary译成了高个子秘书，岂不闹出笑话？
其实secretary在这里是一种书写的桌子，一般上面还附有一个小书架，所以全话的意思是：
我选择了那个高大的写字桌，过去每逢阳光明媚的日子，母亲常坐在窗前的桌旁写信。
Secretary的意思还是不少的，除去容易见到的秘书以外，它还可以指书记，如：
中共中央总书记 the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China
省委书记 Secretary of a provincial1 Party Committee
书记处 secretariat（secretary的变体）
秘书长的顺序正好和总书记倒过来，是secretarygeneral, 如：
联合国秘书长 the Secretary General of the United Nations
还有很多职务从中文字面看并没秘书字样，但英语仍需用secretary，如：
美国国务卿 the Secretary of State
美国财政部长 the Secretary of Treasury2
美国教育部长 the Secretary of Education
美国国防部长 the Secretary of Defense3
最后大家来讲说，办公室的秘书还可以如何说呢？有一种不太常见的说法，叫做girl Friday，它大概是从man Friday演化而来的。英国小说家笛福写了本《鲁宾逊漂流记》，男主角的仆人就叫man Friday。
